# Expert Cleaning Blogs: Tips for Commercial and Residential Cleaning
# The New Normal: Why Antimicrobial Disinfecting Remains a Difference-Maker
April 30, 2021 [Imperial Cleaning](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/author/imperial-cleaning) [Insider](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/tag/insider), [News](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/tag/news), [Commercial](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/tag/commercial), [Residential](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/tag/residential), [Disinfecting](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/tag/disinfecting), [Imperial Cleaning](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/tag/imperial-cleaning)
Imperial Cleaning is proud to recognize how our customers acted quickly to adopt elite professional cleaning protocols to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on their employees and customers. These additional cleaning and disinfection programs provided maximum protection but also resulted in higher expenses. Today, as more people are getting vaccinated, some of our customers have asked: “Can we reduce our cleaning, disinfecting, and antimicrobial programs back to where we were before the pandemic?” The simple answer is no, and there are many reasons why.
## The Science Behind Disinfecting is Irrefutable
Based on the science, we are optimistic about the need for this type of cleaning in the first place. The massive increase in cleaning and disinfection programs, paired with school closings and employees working from home, has resulted in a significant drop in absenteeism and employer-compensated sick days.
[The CDC has reported](https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6937a6.htm) that cases of circulation of influenza in the United States are currently at historical lows (median = 0.20% tests positive in 2020 versus 2.35% in 2019).
What stands out is that the measures are taken to contain the virus, such as mask-wearing, disinfecting, and social distancing, have resulted in [healthier environments](https://blog.imperialcleaning.com/blog/a-happy-clean-and-healthy-office-starts-with-disinfecting) and less opportunity for other viruses like influenza to spread.
## 4 Reasons to Maintain Antimicrobial Disinfecting Protocol
As your employees and customers return, learn why maintaining your current safety protocols, including antimicrobial disinfecting, is essential as ever.
### Viruses Mutate
In addition to the Brazilian variant, the South Africa variant, and the UK variant, [the CDC has identified multiple variants](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/transmission/variant.html) that they are monitoring under three classifications: Variant of Interest (VOI), Variant of Concern (VOC), and Variant of High Consequence (VOHC).
### Risk Mitigation
As we watch what’s happening abroad, we have become increasingly aware that no one wants to see a harsh new wave of COVID-19 in the United States. With businesses reopening, facility managers have begun to recognize that a small investment now will help mitigate the risk of reoccurrence and higher expenses in the future.
### The Dangerous Dozen
In addition to coronaviruses like influenza, dozens of microorganisms have been floating around surfaces in our environment for years. They are a leading cause of disease and infection, causing sickness to staff and customers, which costs employers billions of dollars in absenteeism and sick days nationally every year.
### Swiss Cheese
Disinfection, especially if performed by uncertified or untrained applicators, can be imperfect and leave holes in coverage. These holes, when present, can leave your employees and staff unprotected. Antimicrobial disinfecting programs help plug those holes and provide the peace of mind that bacteria and dangerous pathogens have not found uncovered areas to propagate in.
## Take Pride in Knowing You Provide the Utmost Protection
With an antimicrobial disinfecting program, your company can take pride in the knowledge that you are providing a clean, safe and healthy environment that is proven to reduce absenteeism and promote employee satisfaction and attendance.
